BRIEF HISTORY and RECENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS
- The
Wildlife Federation has an outstanding history of conservation leadership
in North Carolina
- For
example, we played fundamental roles in establishing the Wildlife
Resources Commission, in creating the Alligator River and the Roanoke
River National Wildlife Refuges, in bringing recycling, sediment
pollution, and buffer zone legislation to North Carolina, and in
reintroducing endangered red wolves, bald eagles and river otters.
- Recently,
NCWF took the lead in organizing the hunting and fishing community in
North Carolina to successfully fight the proposed changes to the Clean
Water Act regarding rollbacks of protections for isolated wetlands and
intermittent streams.
- Our
staff and professional wildlife and aquatic biologists are working to
develop wildlife management plans for thousands of acres of habitat across
North Carolina. For example, they are actively participating as
Stakeholders in the dam Relicensing hearings for the Catawba and Pee Dee
rivers, and in the forest management planning processes for several state
and national parks.
- Our
wildlife habitat certification projects have expanded to include
backyards, schoolyards, workplaces, industrial sites, and lands managed by
communities of faith. We continue to recruit and train volunteer Habitat
Stewards who do much of the legwork for these certification projects.
NCWF will harness the power of hunters, anglers, and
wildlife enthusiasts across North Carolina to advance the conservation
movement. Currently, we are working to build and sustain a large and diverse
activist base from this community. We are bringing to the table an ever larger
and more diverse group of advocates for NC’s natural resources.
