Wildlife Conservation
The future for wildlife begins with sound science and public policy free from undue influence. For more than half a century the N.C. Wildlife Federation has worked to ensure that the state’s vibrant wildlife communities are managed sensibly and sustainably.
Project: Wildlife Conservation
Project
The Issue:
United States laws and policies place the primary responsibility for wildlife management in the hands of individual states. State fish and wildlife agencies have a lengthy success record of conserving game species due to contributions from hunter and angler license fees and federal excise taxes. However, about 90% of our nation’s wildlife are non-game species. The result is a serious gap in wildlife conservation funding with thousands of species falling through the cracks.
To prevent wildlife from becoming endangered, North Carolina has created the NC Wildlife Action Plan. This plan provides a long-term conservation vision around which citizens and communities can mobilize and produce on-the-ground results in areas such as reptile and amphibian research; Piedmont songbird surveys; urban wildlife management planning; small mammal research; western region bird and mammal monitoring; beach-nesting bird reproduction research; stream restoration coordination plans throughout the state; and wildlife-related conservation education.
The Action:
NCWF will strengthen and mobilize the NC Teaming with Wildlife coalition to help implement and secure funding for the NC Wildlife Action Plan. |
