Land Stewardship
Forest or field, public or private, high country or
cypress-ringed swamp—land is where conservation
starts. Every acre matters, which is why the N.C. Wildlife
Federation’s work on behalf of land stewardship
encompasses projects as diverse as landscape-scale planning
for large public holdings and backyard habitat improvements
for homeowners.
Project: OLF
(Outlying Landing Field)
The Issue: Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge
is located in eastern NC’s Washington County and
represents one of the most ecologically significant
regions in the US. The refuge is an important fall and
winter sanctuary for migratory birds and an integral
part of the Atlantic Flyway. Upwards of 67,000 snow
geese, nearly half of the world’s population of
tundra swans, and tens of thousands of ducks rest and
forage around 113,000 acres of federally protected land.
The Navy has proposed building an outlying landing
field (OLF) in this region.
The Action: NCWF will continue to play a leading
role in judiciary, political, and educational initiatives
to halt the construction of the OLF in the critical
habitats of the Pocosin Lakes region.
