What is National Wildlife Week (NWW)?
National Wildlife Week (NWW) is a week-long celebration of wildlife and the
outdoors that aims to connect people with nature, foster awareness of the natural
world, and inspire stewardship throughout the year. The National Wildlife Federation
and partner organizations are planning events and activities for individuals,
families, as well as for groups of all ages, locations, and backgrounds.
NWW intentionally overlaps with National
and Global Youth Service Day and Earth Day so that resources and materials can
be utilized by a variety of groups participating in wide ranging initiatives
making it an
energizing week of service, learning and celebrations around the world!
What is happening throughout the week?
Integrated throughout National Wildlife Week are three themes, each with partners,
resources, activities and events dedicated specifically to them:
Days of Service:
National and Global Youth Service Day (NGYSD) and NWF are partnering to inspire
groups of youth to participate in environment-based service projects that lead
to healthy communities. In addition to free toolkits developed by NGYSD staff,
NWF has developed Project Tips and Suggestions that cover a range of topics
including habitat restoration and climate change. http://www.ysa.org
Read with Ranger Rick and Friends:
In collaboration with First Book, youth and adults will celebrate wildlife through
reading! Recommended reading lists and activities will be provided as well as
web-based tools for groups to share experiences
and network with each other. http://www.firstbook.org
Wildlife Watch:
Individuals, families and groups will be encouraged to venture outside and share
what they see! E-Nature on-line field guides and personalized field journals
will assist observers in identifying, recording and
sharing wildlife they find everywhere --from backyards to urban and rural environments.
Web resources will be provided to collect data, map results and share stories.
